How to Stop Laptop Fan Noise (Step-by-Step Guide)

If your laptop’s fan is making it sound like a plane is taking off, dust buildup is likely the main cause, along with some other possible reasons. First, check the vents, then check the power plan settings, and only consider other options after that. Cooling pads will not help fix this issue.

After eight years of working in enterprise technology and cyber security, and having seen more overheating laptops than I can count, I can tell you that loud lap tops almost always have a cause that can be solved. I am the founder of Techisane, and if your laptop fan sounds like a small plane, you are not the only one. You also do not have to live with it. There are three options that I am going to present you in order of what you should try. These options are going to be valid and no nonsense, no vague advice, no unnecessary purchases.

Why Your Laptop Fan Gets Loud

Before you go and try to solve loud laptop fans, it is good to know why they are screaming in the first place. Laptop fans going faster is normal, and they are meant to cool the laptop down. The real problem is when the fan has to work too hard and continuously runs at max speed.

The leading four issues that cause loud laptop fans are:

  1. Dust buildup obstructing vents and fan blades
  2. Old thermal paste that impacts heat transfer
  3. High CPU or GPU load from background processes
  4. Vents that are obstructed by placing the laptop on soft surfaces

While each of these issues presents a unique thermal challenge, the final result is the same: fan speed and noise increase, and if the problem is prolonged, thermal throttling begins which will reduce system performance to prevent further damage to the laptop.

How to Stop Laptop Fan Noise (Step-by-Step Fixes)

Step 1: Clean the Vents and Fan

The first solution I recommend is using compressed air to blow dust out of the vents. The price of a can of compressed air is well worth the time it saves to troubleshoot through software. The laptop will benefit from being cleaned from multiple angles, and if the laptop is more than 2 years old and has never been deep cleaned, you will likely see a lot of dust get blown out.

Vent cleaning may not solve all the problems but cleaning the dust from the fan and other internal laptop components will help. Having the bottom panel removed will allow you to access the internal components, but be sure to turn the laptop off and unplug the laptop before performing internal maintenance.

Step 2: Replace Dried Thermal Paste

It is likely that a laptop's thermal paste dries and cracks after three to four years because of how thermal paste breaks down. This deterioration negatively impacts the transfer of heat from the CPU to the heat sink. Linus Tech Tips found that the replacement of old thermal paste can lower CPU temperature by almost twenty degrees Celsius. Lower CPU temperatures result in lower fan speeds.

All that is needed to replace thermal paste, which requires the removal of the heat sink, is to clean the heat sink with Isopropyl alcohol and then replace the paste. The heat sink can then be put back in place. For someone attempting this for the first time, it is a good idea to watch a video of other people attempting to do the same thing to the same make and model.

Step 3: Manage Background Processes and CPU Load

Open the Task Manager or Activity Monitor and sort by which programs are using the most CPU. There should be almost no processes using more than ten to fifteen percent of the CPU when the laptop is idle. Programs that most often use too much CPU are video playing browser tabs, poorly designed programs, and programs the user forgot they were running.

Closing unused browser tabs and programs will lower the CPU temperature.

Step 4: Adjusting Power and Fan Curve Settings

More often than not, this step is neglected. As you will see in the next step, this will not be the case for you. Go to your power plan settings and set your plan to "Balanced". Alternatively, you can create a custom plan that limits the maximum state of the processor. On many Windows laptops, the default plan allows the CPU to run at 100% of its state. Even if it doesn't require 100%, it will run at 100%, which creates a lot of unnecessary heat 

Step 5: Use a Hard, Flat Surface

Laptop vents are usually found on the bottom or side of the laptop. Soft surfaces such as beds or couches block laptop vents. Using a Hard, Flat surface such as a book can significantly improve ventilation and reduce fan activity.

The Power Plan Setting Your Laptop Is Almost Certainly Ignoring

The worst, and most common, power plan setting mistake (even from people I would consider to be fairly tech-savvy) is to run a laptop on "High Performance" mode 24/7, completely losing the idea of what this actually means.

The Windows "High Performance" setting essentially means that the processor is locked to maximum clock speeds. 100% of the time. That means even when you are writing a document or reading an email, the laptop runs hot, the fans are at max speeds, and will drown you in noise. Switching to "Balanced" allows the processor to scale down, which is most of the time for everyday tasks.

On macOS, low-performance graphics modes and battery optimization settings do similar things. Keeping the GPU in low-performance mode as needed allows for reduced temperatures and even fan usage.

This is the only setting I can attribute to stopping annoying fan noise the most out of every other thing I have tried. Most of the time, the annoying fan noise is because of the setting mentioned above.

Why Cooling Pads Don’t Usually Help

Cooling pads are the most common recommended solutions. I get the appeal, they are easy to buy and logical, but they don’t usually answer why the laptop is overheating.

If the internal airflow is blocked by dust, or the thermal paste has gone bad, then cooling pads don’t help the problem. The heat is still inside the laptop between the CPU and the heat sink.

Cooling pads do help if the internal cooling is working fine and there is just surface heat. If the thermal paste has gone bad or the heat sink is clogged, then cooling pads don’t help the problem.

What I Do to Fix Noisy Laptops

If someone hands me a loud laptop, this is exactly what I do and in this order.

1. Task Manager pops up first. If a program is using a ton of CPU, I stop it and see if the noise goes away. This takes less than a minute and is free.

2. Check if your power plan is set on "Balanced" - it takes about 30 seconds with a high probability of solving the problem.

3. Use compressed air to clear your vents - it takes about five minutes with a good chance that it is overdue maintenance.

4. If the laptop is more than 3 years old and the previous three steps don't solve the issue, it may be necessary to open the chassis and replace the thermal paste.

5. Use the manufacturer software (example: Lenovo Vantage, ASUS Armory Crate, or Dell Power Manager) to adjust fan curve if your laptop supports it and if the previous steps don't solve the issue.

I do not recommend going to a repair shop before steps one through four have been completed, as most fan noise (in my experience) can be solved without spending more than on a can of compressed air and a tube of thermal paste.

Why is my laptop fan so loud if I'm not doing anything to tax the system?


The most common reason is that something is running in the background using the CPU. Open the task manager (or activity monitor) and sort processes by CPU to check. Common reasons include antivirus scans, system updates, and a myriad of browser extensions.

Can a loud laptop fan mean there's damage?


A loud laptop fan isn't necessarily indicative of damage to the system, but if the cooling system is struggling, it is a symptom that can cause damage to the hardware in a short time.

How often do I need to clean my laptop fan?


Cleaning your laptop fan about every six months is a good minimum. If you use your laptop in dusty environments, or use it on a fabric surface, every three to four months is more appropriate.

Can fan noises tell us if fans are failing?


Yes. A failing fan bearing will create a much different sound profile than the annoying whirring fans we are accustomed to. Grinding and rattling are much more characteristic of a failing fan than a high-pitched sound. In these cases the fan will need to be replaced, as no software or thermal solutions will address a failing fan.

The Easiest Solution

What makes the problem of a noisy laptop fan trivial is the fact that no hardware will need to be replaced in the vast number of cases. Dust bunnies, degraded thermal paste, runaway background processes, and assuming that set the Power plan to High Performance for extended periods of time are the usual suspects.

Cleaning this up in the right order: software, dust bunnies, and only then, thermal paste. 

While you do need to open up the laptop to change the thermal paste, most laptops that are 3 years or older will benefit from this giant temperature drop of 15 - 20 °C . Clean out the vents twice a year and this will most likely be a problem of the past.
